Day 7: The Volcanology Smörgasbord
Welcome to the Bryn Mawr College Geology Department BLOG of our Spring 2023 faculty/student trip to northern Arizona and southern Utah. This trip is part of a half-credit course intended to give Bryn Mawr Geology majors a first hand field experience and exposure to a diversity of rock types and geologic provinces. This years trip will find our group arriving in Phoenix Arizona on the evening of Friday March 3rd. After a night in Phoenix we will travel through the ancient Precambrian rocks north of Phoenix on the way up the Mogollon Rim and ultimately onto the Colorado Plateau. We then spend a day in Petrified Forest National Park with a side trip to Meteor Crater. Next we travel north to Page, AZ, were we will observe Rocky Mountain Laramide deformation, the dwindling waters of Lake Powell, and the spectacular Glenn Canyon Dam. On our second day in Page we will venture down the Colorado River through the famous Horseshoe Bend for a half-day river float trip. The next two days will be spend in and around Grand Canyon National Park with an ultimate day-long hike down into the canyon depths along the Bright Angel Trail. Our final field day will be spent in the San Francisco volcanic field around Flagstaff, AZ, were we will hike on recent cinder cone volcanoes and see ancient structures left by the indigenous Pueblo people. We will end back on Phoenix and return to Bryn Mawr on Saturday March 11th. Daily Blog updates will be provided by our student participants.
